Elvira loved Knight Commander Rayne for ten years, but her sister Ophelia stole the credit for saving him, leaving Elvira neglected. After seeing Rayne's obsession with Ophelia, Elvira gives up, breaks the engagement, and marries Cassius—the last dragon descendant and richest man in the empire. Cassius has secretly protected her for years and publicly claims her with the Dragon's Lamplighting ritual. Rayne learns the truth and catches Ophelia with Morlock, the Dark God's priest. He exposes her lie and mutilates himself in atonement—too late. Cassius traps Morlock, whose crimes are exposed and who is bound for judgment. On the eve of the wedding, Ophelia tries to run Elvira down; Rayne shields her, losing his legs, and Ophelia dies. Rayne watches from his wheelchair as Elvira and Cassius marry—paying the price for his mistakes, while Elvira finds true happiness.
