Kael, the leader of a human caravan, encounters a werewolf illusion in the Black Forest. After seeing through the illusion, he meets Lycan, the werewolf prince. The two go from flirting and testing each other’s boundaries to falling in love; they exchange covenant rings, binding their souls together. The Wolf King Fenris forcibly intervenes, forcing Lycan to inherit the throne and marry his fiancée. Kael burst into the ceremony, and Lycan publicly acknowledged their marriage. After Kael became pregnant, the Wolf King imprisoned him and forced him to separate from Lycan. Kael accidentally destroyed the Wolf King’s ring, causing the Black Mist to spiral out of control and the palace to collapse. Twins were born—one a pure-blooded werewolf, the other more human-like—yet both were born to be Wolf Kings, capable of controlling the wolf pack with their howls. Fenris seized the baby boy, but Kael threatened to destroy the ring and reclaimed the child. Ultimately, Lycan became the new Wolf King and enacted a rule stating that “werewolves must not eat humans or actively attack them,” and Fenris relented. Kael and Lycan remained in the palace with their two children, while their caravan companions returned to the human town to spread the news of the werewolves’ transformation.
