Eight-year-old Ellie lives at the Blue Ridge Wildlife Rescue Center. The center is on the brink of bankruptcy, and her father, Tom, scrambles every day between bills, cages, and animal placements. After an accident, Ellie suddenly discovers she can understand what animals are saying. The first voice she hears belongs to Sage, a cougar everyone has written off as dangerous. Sage snarls at anyone who comes near; the staff believe she is aggressive and are even preparing to cull her. Only Ellie hears her true fear—as a cub, Sage was repeatedly chased and bitten by Canadian geese, and ever since, whenever she is afraid, she roars to protect herself. Ellie uses patience and food to help herrebuild a sense of safety, and Tom ends up taking on the cougar no one else dared to handle. For the first time, the rescue center gains attention because of an animal's story.Soon after, Blaze, a bear from a circus, is sent to the center. For nearly three days, he refuses to eat on his own. The veterinarian can only keep him hydrated, and heremainsstanding upright the whole time; experts judge that his behavior has fully regressed. But Ellie discovers that Blaze isn't mindless at all—he's doing math problems in the sand. She uses a wager to get Blaze to speak again, then guides him back to eating through a "master-and-apprentice" bond. Word spreads fast that the bear can calculate, and the rescue center goes from being ignored to a place tourists line up to visit. The traffic brings income—but also doubt, competition, and new troubles. Jack, who runs a large safari park, watches his own visitor numbers drop and starts targeting the Blue Ridge center's reputation, using animals and public opinion to attack Tom.In the rescues that follow, Ellie helps Digger the baboon find the work he is truly good at, turning him from a mocked "troublemaker" into the center's valued helper. A North American badger, with its sharp eye for locks, welds, and cage doors, uncovers the hidden safety flaws behind the animal escapes. And an African grey parrot who has long been silent and plucking its own feathers, finally sings again with Ellie's company. Every animal seems strange on the surface, but behind each one lies a story that was never understood. As the rescue center grows famous, Tom transforms from a manager who only wanted to get through the day into someone who is truly willing to take responsibility for the animals. Ellie comes to understand that being able to hear animals doesn't mean she can solve everything—what truly matters is respect, patience, and continuous learning. In the end, Blue Ridge Wildlife Rescue Center holds an open day. The cougar, the bear, the baboon, the badger, and the African grey parrot each face the visitors in their own way. Standing in the center of the rehabilitation area, Ellie finally says her wish out loud: she doesn't want to tame animals—she just wants to become a qualified caretaker, so that every voice can be heard
