Queen Nephele, a former fisherwoman, suffers neglect as King Athamas indulges his mistress Ino. On her eighth birthday, Princess Helle is abandoned on a leaking boat by her father. She perishes in the freezing sea, crying for help. Devastated by grief, Nephele transforms into an avenger, exposing her husband's cruelty and hypocrisy before their daughter's memorial portrait. Athamas collapses in remorse and leaps into the sea. Clutching Helle's shell necklace, Nephele walks away alone—her love for her daughter now hardened into eternal farewell.
