Gary Leed's world is divided between his dangerous construction site where he trades his health for wages and the modest home where Ian studies for a future Gary could only dream of. When Gary's body collapses—years of malnutrition and exhaustion collecting their debt—father and son face an impossible choice. Ian Leed, witnessing his father's suffering, volunteers to abandon his education and enter the workforce, but Gary refuses to let poverty claim another generation. Having once survived on street corners where he exchanged dignity for coins, Gary is determined that his son's hands will hold books, not bricks.
