Elena, the daughter of strict abbot Katherine confined in a remote convent, harbors a secret love for fellow nun Margaret, which triggers furious suppression from her mother. Thirty years prior, Katherine also loved a woman but was torn apart by religious rules, so she vents all her trauma and hatred on her daughter. The two young women hide their affection amid labor, prayers and narrow chambers, enduring isolation and public condemnation. As hidden truths about Katherine’s lost lover surface, old wounds reopen. After a collapse of the convent bell tower and pressure from the diocese, Katherine finally lets go of her obsession with obedience. The story concludes with three generations of heartache healed, the bell no longer a symbol of confinement but a signal of quiet, unapologetic love between the two nuns.
