Old fisherman Santiago has caught nothing for eighty-four days. Refusing to surrender, he sails alone into the deep sea—and after three grueling days, subdues a 1,300-pound marlin. But sharks devour his catch on the way home, leaving only a skeleton. Though everyone calls him a loser, he never admits defeat: "A man can be destroyed, never defeated."
