In the Upper East Side of New York, Dr. Ava Moore is an emergency surgeon at a Manhattan hospital—and the last survivor of an upstate police family. Her father died in the line of duty; her mother drank herself to death. The only family Ava has left is Raven Moore, the abandoned neighbor girl she took in and raised as her own sister. But Raven grew up to become the head of the Red Serpents, a Brooklyn underworld gang, and the Department of Justice has made her its number-one target. To buy Raven a federal immunity deal and wipe clean her drug charges, Ava makes an impossible trade: she agrees to marry State Senator Ethan Sterling, surrendering her freedom and her life savings in a single cold transaction. The engagement sends Raven into a fury. Convinced no man deserves Ava, she moves into Ava's apartment, plants wiretaps in her bedroom, and drags Ava away from Ethan in the dead of night, claiming her again and again. Ava endures it all in silence. Then Raven finds the immunity agreement—and the truth shatters her: Ava never ran, never abandoned her. She offered herself up as a sacrifice, a scapegoat, to buy Raven a future. Raven's predatory armor cracks. Her obsessive claiming turns into a fierce, all-consuming protection. And Ava finally sees her fiancé clearly: Ethan is a cold politician who treats marriage as a ballot lever, hides a years-long affair with his own campaign aide, and, when the truth begins to surface, uses his judicial connections to strip Ava's medical license and bury her reputation. Cornered with nothing left to lose, Ava and Raven join forces. In a single night, every piece of Ethan's infidelity and his family's money-laundering records land on the front page of the New York Post—and the senator's carefully built empire crumbles in the morning light.
