In Charleston, South Carolina, Leon—head of the St. Clair Group—goes missing after falling into the sea. The billion-dollar trust fund triggers the “Lineage Extinction Liquidation Mechanism,” and branch elder Herbert attempts to carve up the estate. Leon’s fiancée, Althea, delays the 45-day legal review period with a forged “positive pregnancy report.” Her only way to protect the fund is to find a child carrying St. Clair blood. She tracks down Julian—Leon’s illegitimate half-brother, a brute who has spent ten years hiding in underground fight rings. Althea signs a “Lifetime Substitute Contract” with him, having him wear her dead fiancé’s mask and return to the board as head of the family—suppressing the branch by day, providing bloodline by night. But Julian has been waiting for her from the start. Using Althea’s hand to enter legitimate society, he intercepts three billion from the fund at the critical moment, turning her from “controller” into “co-conspirator.” Just as the two establish their “master and shadow” symbiotic relationship, the real Leon returns—wearing the same mask. He holds surveillance footage from beside a dry well ten years ago, plastic surgery hospital repair records, and access to every hidden camera in the estate. What he wants to settle is not Althea’s betrayal, but Julian’s existence itself.
