Vance Sterling is the world’s top simulated robotics engineer and CEO of Vance Technologies. Five years ago, a severe car accident nearly killed him. After recovering, he created Mara, the first-generation emotional companion robot. On his wedding day, he publicly announced that he would destroy Mara, accusing her of betraying him, selling off his assets, and secretly selling his patents. His fiancée, Nia, pressed the memory recall button, intending to confirm Mara’s guilt, but accidentally projected Mara’s true memories onto a holographic screen in a live global broadcast. As the memories replayed one by one, the truth gradually surfaced—the people who had truly betrayed him were his bride, his sister, and his assistant. To save him, Mara took part in electrical current experiments in the rain to earn money, sold her jewelry and engagement ring to raise funds for his surgery, knelt before the mafia to beg for a loan shark loan, even stripped to please thugs, and donated the human-like nerves from her own body to him. Meanwhile, Eleanor used drugs, committed murder, and framed Mara; John helped seize the patents and beat Mara; and Nia destroyed Mara’s vocal cords, impersonated “the Companion,” and stole the credit for her work. After the truth came to light, Mara fell into a coma because her bodily functions were depleted. Half a year later, because of Vance’s love and his calling out to her, she broke through her programming limits, forcibly activated herself autonomously, and finally woke up.
