The story begins with the protagonist, Hesper—a Dragon Mother who assumed human form to repay a debt of gratitude after losing her ability to transform into a dragon in an avalanche—being humiliated by a knight of the Kingdom of Wester; he tells her she is unworthy of questioning the marriage between Princess Florence and the High Priest Cedrin. Hesper feels deeply aggrieved, as it was she who had gifted Cedrin a dragon scale—which he presented to the royal court—to secure his position as High Priest, only for him to betray his promise and cast her aside. She had hoped for support from Cedrin’s visually impaired sister, Prudence, but Prudence decisively sided with Cedrin after receiving a gift of eye-healing fruit from the princess. Meanwhile, upon learning she is to be sacrificed to the Dragon Mother to ensure the kingdom's protection, Hesper resolves to exact revenge.
