Grayson returns home to open a mill, unaware his wife Candy has been having an affair with neighbor Duane. When she learns he'll be wealthy, Candy tries to break it off—but Duane threatens and forces her to continue. Grayson's mother Margaret catches them in a cornfield, suffers a stroke, and is left paralyzed. Candy and Duane neglect her, worsening her condition. Duane embezzles mill funds to gamble, falls into debt, and plots to sell Candy to creditors. Townsfolk expose the affair and embezzlement to Grayson. Candy tries to elope with Duane, but his trafficking scheme is exposed—he, the creditors, and Candy are arrested. Grayson moves on, accepts the kind Loretta, and together they care for Margaret and run the mill, starting anew.
