Charlotte Aster, heir of House Aster, disguises herself as a plain girl to escape an arranged Marriage Pact with House Valeris. She plays ugly and keeps her head down, hoping to survive one year and walk away free. But her cover keeps slipping. She wins a rune competition, beats the eldest son Lucian in a dragon race. Lucian goes from suspecting her to being drawn to her. The gentle Elias, the bold Kael, and the tough-talking Theo all begin to see her differently too.
