Sophia had been secretly married to Beckett, the heir to the Houston cosmetics empire, for three years. She loved him selflessly, yet endured endless humiliation. Three years ago, when a massive hurricane struck the South, the three of them were trapped in a collapsed wine cellar. To save Beckett, Sophia inhaled toxic ammonia gas and temporarily lost her voice; she then risked her life to drag Emmet to safety. However, her half-sister Mia stole credit for the rescue. Since Beckett had witnessed Sophia saving Emmet with his own eyes, he became convinced that she had left him to die. He blackmailed her with funds from the historic botanical garden left by Sophia’s mother, presenting a divorce agreement 101 times to force her to work as Mia’s behind-the-scenes perfumery assistant. The conflict came to a head at the cigar bar, where Beckett allowed Mia to smash the rare rose essential oil that her mother had left to Sophia, and then forced Sophia—who suffers from severe asthma—to stand for ten minutes in a room filled with cigar smoke just to please Mia. On the verge of suffocation, Sofia’s heart was completely broken, and she resolved to divorce him. To save the botanical garden, she accepted an investment from Emmet, a Texas-based offshore shipping magnate. Emmet was the very man she had saved years ago; now, with a vast business empire at his disposal, he had returned solely to protect his savior. At Beckett and Mia’s lavish engagement party at the estate, the plot took a dramatic turn. Beckett, expecting Sofia to beg him to take her back, instead catches her signing a contract with Emmet—and learns that Sofia is the founder of “Phantom Perfume,” the woman he’d been desperately searching for over the past three years. Upon discovering the truth, Beckett suffers a mental breakdown and resorts to desperate, humiliating pleas to win her back—kneeling in the rain at the botanical garden and intercepting her motorcade—all met with Sofia’s cold indifference. Mia met a tragic end due to massive casino debts, and Beckett’s cosmetics empire went bankrupt and collapsed. Left with nothing, he became a homeless man. Watching Sophia—her belly slightly rounded as she embraced Emmet happily—he ultimately lost his mind completely.
