Evelyn Black, the sole heir of the Black family, faces a coup a month before her succession ceremony. Her stepmother Jessica Murdock, backed by board members, demands a delay on grounds of Evelyn being "too young and inexperienced," nominating herself as interim CEO. Evelyn's father enables Jessica at every turn. Evelyn discovers Jessica may be connected to the Blackwater Syndicate. She goes straight to its leader, Victor Saladin—a ruthless, merciless killer who cares only for his sister Kyla. Evelyn accidentally saves Kyla. Victor, needing a "clean woman" to provide a proper upbringing for his sister, strikes a deal with Evelyn. They cooperate, and feelings grow between them. At the succession ceremony, Jessica sees Evelyn's boyfriend—and her legs give out. She drops to her knees: "Godfather... spare me."
