As a councilman's wife, Verity was the legitimate spouse who had stood by Paul as he rose to prominence. Yet for the sake of her children, she had long endured the endless provocations of Rosalind, the other woman. In the end, when Paul—fearing that Rosalind's crimes would damage his political career—tried to make Verity take the blame, she finally saw the family for what it was and walked away. In the end, she found a second spring in both her career and love.
