Martha favors her second son Jason and his wife Jessica, despising her eldest daughter-in-law Rebecca for having a girl. She steals from her eldest son to support Jason, even abandoning Rebecca during labor to care for Jessica. After receiving the buyout money from the old village, she secretly sells the old family house and gives the entire $2.5 million to Jason for a house in a top school district, leaving David's family with nothing. Rebecca endures this for years until her husband David finally wakes up and refuses to let his mother live with them. Kicked out of Jason's house and rejected by Natalie, Martha ends up all alone.
